Steve Coffman

Class Of 2026

Steve is best remembered within the KBOA for his years of devoted service as KBOA Chaplain. In that role, he offered unwavering compassion—making countless phone calls, hospital visits, and personal check-ins to comfort officials and their families during difficult times. His steady presence, uplifting words, and genuine care made him one of the most trusted and beloved figures in our association.

His commitment to serving others extended far beyond the court. Steve was the cofounder of the KBOA Christmas Fund, now known as the Bush/Coffman Christmas Fund, which has raised nearly $100,000 to support families in need throughout the community. He was also deeply involved with the Cabbage Patch Settlement House and the Streetball Showdown, always looking for ways to help wherever he was needed. Service was simply part of who he was.

Before beginning his officiating career, Steve spent time as a player-coach for the
Kentucky Bourbons, an experience that shaped his understanding of the game and the
people who play it. That perspective made him an even more effective mentor, leader,
and supporter of KBOA officials.

Within the KBOA, Steve served as President in 1987–88 and continued contributing for decades as an official observer after his retirement from the floor. In 1987, he earned both the President’s Award and the Gold Whistle Award in recognition of his exceptional dedication.

Cherished for his humor, kindness, and signature personality, Steve was affectionately known by two nicknames: “Old Dad Gummitt” and “Honey Babe.” His legacy of compassion, leadership, and service continues to define the best of what the KBOA stands for.
