Dennis Newton

Class Of 2026

Dennis Newton is regarded as one of the top officials in the history of the KBOA. When Dennis stepped on the floor, there was never a question about who was in charge—his confidence, command, and professionalism set the tone for every game he worked.

He served as KBOA President in 1985–86 and earned the association’s highest honor, the Gold Whistle Award, in 1985. His excellence led to multiple state-level assignments, representing the KBOA at the Boys State Tournament in 1989, 1990, 1992, and 1994.

Despite his size, Dennis moved exceptionally well—fast, agile, and smooth for a big man—a trait shaped in part by his background as a player for the Kentucky Bourbons. His athleticism extended beyond basketball, as he was also inducted into the Kentucky Softball Hall of Fame.

Dennis was as quotable as he was respected, and he became known for one of the most memorable lines in KBOA history: “Don’t call what you can’t handle.”

His strength, presence, and unmistakable style left a lasting mark on the KBOA and the officials who followed in his footsteps.
