John Heldman

Class Of 2026

The KBOA Dedication to Excellence Award is presented in memory of John Heldman to a new official who demonstrates exceptional ability, strong technique, and a commitment to the high standards of the KBOA.

John Heldman’s legacy stretches far beyond his remarkable achievements as a coach and administrator at the University of Louisville—he established a standard of excellence that continues to influence the officiating community today. As head baseball coach from 1937 to 1965, Heldman guided the Cardinals to a 67.7% winning percentage, including the program’s only undefeated seasons, and earned induction into both the College Baseball Hall of Fame (1966) and the U of L Athletic Hall of Fame (1978).

Yet his impact was not limited to the field. Heldman was a mentor, a teacher, and a champion of personal and professional development. His commitment to helping others grow is the foundation on which this award was built.

In honoring John Heldman, the KBOA celebrates the emerging officials who show the same promise, dedication, and pursuit of excellence that he exemplified throughout his career.
